Reader's Gardens Vera's Garden
Surrey Hills, Australia
When we first moved into the property a little over five years ago, we found ourselves in an empty and barren situation. There was nothing. No trees and no grass. My main objective was to make it green.
So I removed approximately 50 cubic meters of excess soil from garden beds and overgrown bamboo. I then had some fun with a bobcat and leveled out my backyard.
I have a warm spot for ground covers. I have used evergreens in every way possible. They add character to any garden and reduce weeding by half.
At the rear of the house I have a semi octagonal bay window which overlooks most of my backyard. I planted a lavender hedge to add fullness and character to the windows. The lavenders are a soft sight to see from inside and their delicate aroma enters the house when I open the windows.
I paved a small area for some outside enjoyment. I am very proud of the work I have done here using inexpensive paving bricks. Sitting outside here with morning coffee relaxes me enough for the next idea or stage to my garden.
I have incorporated some trees into my garden for the fuller greener look. I found some grafted wisteria Rubina, (Mop Top) and separated the driveways delicately. They bring a lot of attention to the garden. Their unusual trunk and full tops stand out beautifully. They have been growing for nearly five years.
I have a healthy Weeping Cherry Tree that greets me each time I come home. This has taken really well in a semi sun position. When the tree is in full bloom it produces the most delicate pink flowers which compliment the entrance area exclusively.
