Anna's Garden

Mont Albert, Australia

Having only a few established trees in the yard, I decided that I would work around them and compliment what I had. I wanted a pleasant but robust garden. I knew there had to be some planning in that.

To speed up the growth of my new garden I planted numerous trees at early stages of advancement. Including Weeping Silver Birch's', Weeping Elms, Weeping Cherries and Weeping Japanese Maples. As you can see, my taste is quite specific and I wanted to use the vast areas of my yard with dense foliage and the gentle appearance weepers seem to have.

The most predominant feature of my garden is the arched pathway between the main house and the barn. I planted Weeping Sliver Birch's along each side of the garden path and flattered the middle with a very large garden arch. This arch has exquisite Banksia Climbing Roses growing wild in the full sun.

At the end of my garden arch I designed and subsequently built a 6x4mtr pergola. I have Wisteria Floribunda Alba's growing around each pole. They have not yet produced flowers but will certainly be of benefit all year round. What I enjoy most about Wisteria's are their luscious leaves and flowers in summer, all the shade they provide. In winter they then provide us with sun by losing their leaves.

I found it useful to tackle such a garden in sections. Starting with paving, building then planting the trees and shrubs. I redesign the colour scheme each year with seasonal flowers and my seasonal experience. The garden must be watered everyday for the best results, followed very closely by fertiliser and trimming. The key to gardening in my experience is maintenance.

Must get the lawn in good shape. I have some patches in shady areas, which I'm researching at the moment. I would dearly like a pond or a superficial wishing well which I'm also researching. Will keep everyone posted. Thanks for taking pleasure from my garden.
