Erica melanthera 'Ruby Shepherd'
This article was provided by 'Plant Growers Australia'
Botanical Name: Erica melanthera 'Ruby Shepherd'
Common Name: Heath
Size: Height 1m x Spread 1m
Aspect: Full sun.
Flowering: Autumn to early Winter.'Ruby Shepherd' is a particularly stunning form of melanthera and as such is one of the most popular of all heaths. Forming a small evergreen shrub of fine foliage, it puts on a spectacular display of dainty bell-shaped flowers beginning in autumn. The deep reddish pink colour of the flowers will last into the onset of winter adding interest to the garden when most other flowering plants have faded for the cooler months ahead.
Uses: As mentioned, this is a terrific shrub to add colour to the garden during autumn and early winter whilst providing structure to a mixed border for the rest of the year round. As they do not like lime they are particularly suited to planting along other specimens with similar requirements such as azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias.
Cultural Notes: Select a warm, sunny site in a free draining soil. Drought tolerant although mulching and the occasional deep watering during extended dry periods will increase overall plant performance. A light prune after flowering will keep your plant vigorous and encourage further flower production. Use a slow release fertiliser during early spring. Like most heaths, E. 'Ruby Shepherd' dislikes lime or any kind of animal manure and is thus best planted in beds with plants that do not require such additions to the soil such as azaleas and rhododendrons.
