This article was provided by 'Plant Growers Australia'
Botanical Name: Cosmos atrosanguineus 'Chocolate Cosmos'
Common Name: Cosmos - herbaceous perennial
Size: Height 50cm x Spread 45cm
Aspect: Full sun.
Flowering: Summer through autumn. A perennial cosmos producing flowers with a rich chocolate scent that is at its strongest during warm evenings. The flowers are a velvety, deep crimson colour and are held clear of the foliage on long wiry stems. Makes a strong statement in garden borders where it seldom fails to stop the passer-by for closer inspection. Complement 'Chocolate Cosmos' with other plants which produce blue, white, cream, orange, yellow or lemon coloured flowers and/or plants with silver foliage.
Uses: Plant in the middle of your border or garden bed in small drifts of 3-4 plants where the flower stems will keep rising amidst other perennials giving an informal cottage look. 'Chocolate Cosmos' can also be grown in containers although a good quality potting mix is required for optimum results.
Cultural Notes: Select a full sun position with well-drained soil. The plant produces tubers which during winter can either be left undisturbed or, like dahlias, may be lifted, stored in a cool, dry place and planted again come spring.
