This article was provided by 'Plant Growers Australia'
Botanical Name: Chamelaucium spp. Cascade 'Brilliance'
Size: Height to 1.8m x Spread to 1.5m
Aspect: Full sun.
Flowering: Late autumn, through winter and on into spring. This small evergreen shrub belongs to a genus comprising of around 12 species all native to Australia. An attractive foliage plant with soft, needle like foliage for year round interest with the additional bonus of attractive flowers through the cooler months of the year. Buds first begin to appear during autumn opening to a profusion of small white, five petalled flowers which will adorn the shrub right through winter an on into spring. Becoming increasingly pendular as it matures, this shrub makes a particularly beautiful tub specimen or can be used as a focal point within the garden. An easy to grow shrub.
Cultural Notes: Select a full sun with well-drained soil. If planted in heavy soils create a mound to raise the roots from normal soil level. Light pruning after flowering will keep the plants habit neat. A light application of a slow release fertiliser during the spring will be beneficial. Mulching and the addition of organic matter to the soil will encourage an abundance of flowers.
Landscaping Ideas: Attractive evergreen foliage and pendular form makes this shrub a particularly useful specimen for drawing the eye to a particular point in your garden that you would like to highlight to visitors. It's soft, lacy appearance can be 'set off' by nearby planting's of perennials bearing large leaf shapes and/or silver coloured foliage. Try underplanting with spring flowering bulbs to continue the floral display further into spring when flowers of Cascade 'Brilliance' will begin to fade. Can be grown to good effect in large display tubs around paved areas providing a quality potting mix is used to ensure good growth as well as regular applications of a slow release fertiliser.
