A licence has been granted by the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG) to produce a rose as the" Official Rose" of the Sydney 2000 Games to be called "Australia's Olympic Gold Rose".

It is a beautiful deep golden, yellow rose with a mild fruity fragrance, with double flowers in profuse clusters of five or more blooms that are long lasting. The rose reproduces blooms quickly throughout the season. The blooms are carried on long, strong stems above dark green foliage. The bush is upright medium to tall and vigorous grower.

South Australian based The Rose Company and New South Wales based Swanes Nursery have teamed up to create "Australia's Olympic Gold Rose".

The licence is held jointly between The Rose Company of South Australia and Swanes Nursery of New South Wales. The rose was selected by Geoff Swane and Roslyn Comley at Swanes trial rose garden in Narromine, New South Wales. Whilst the idea of a Rose for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games originated from The Rose Company, who better to approach than Geoff Swane, a well respected Rose Grower who has a discerning eye for selecting new varieties for such a wonderful occasion.
