Annual Sweet Peas - Original from Italy, travelling to Britian in the late 1600's, it was here that colours, height and more elegance was achieved. Hybridizers have made the choices available staggering, as they seem to be immeasurable as to what characteristics can be bred into them. Various scents, ruffled petals, profuse bloomers, recurrent bloomers all give the diversity of this old-fashioned vine. Easy to grow from seed, soak the hard-coated seed in water for 24 hours prior to planting. Plant the seeds in a sunny, well-drained area and pinch the tips off when 4"-6" tall, thus forcing them to branch thicker. Remember to water in dry weather and remove the dead blossoms to encourage more blooms, rather than go to seed. Blossoms range from milky-white and soft pastels to rich scarlets and dark purples. Heights range from 1 foot "bush" or "dwarf" varieties to tall "Spencer" varieties.
I have only named a few of the vines available to adorn your fences and walls. Many varieties are suitable for young children as well, to accomplish spectacular results in the garden and why not pick a bouquet to grace your dinner table. Unmistakably easy and effortless, everyone could try at least one type available and achieve great success.
