Persian Violets - These plants always make a person touch them to be sure they are real. The neat mounds of heart-shaped, glossy leaves are underneath the sweet smelling blossoms of purple, lavender, rose or white with bright gold centers. Mainly treated as houseplants, these beautiful plants can venture into a garden setting for the warmer months, then brought indoors again before the first frost. Either massed together along a border or kept in pots, they are a worthwhile addition to any garden.

Coleus - If only foliage is what you're after, then this is a plant that works well. Leaves are available in many forms; plain golden yellow, bronze and red, or with edges of a golden yellow or green. This plant looks best when mass planted or planted in pots.

There is a large group of perennials suitable for part- or full-shade, some of the care-free types available are:

Periwinkle - A great groundcover with dark green, glossy leaves and four-petalled violet-blue flowers. It increases in size somewhat rapidly, but controllably, with long vines that when touch the ground, root themselves at the leaf axils.

Lady's Mantle - A wonderful mounding plant with rounded, slightly serrated leaves. When the rain or dew has collected on these leaves they glisten almost magically. Lime-green, fluffy flowers emerge from the center of the plant on square stems, only adding to it's loveliness. This plant will also grow well in full sun if given adequate moisture.
