Many people assume that if they have shade in their backyard, then their gardens are limited. This is not so! There are several perennials and annuals that are tolerant of full- or partial shade and some even thrive in it.

Annuals that require full or partial shade include:

Impatiens - These trusty stand-bys that everyone can admire, either in flowerbeds, pots or baskets. Dark green, round and glossy leaves are beneath flowers available in many colours. Flowers are most commonly seen as a single type, but, a double form resembling a small rose is available. Impatiens blossoms are available in single-colour forms, dark centered, and are newly available in two-tones with lines resembling crosses across the blossom.

Vinca - This is a less used flower in flowerbed and pots. The blossoms resemble impatiens, available in rose, pink or white. Vinca has dark green, oily looking leaves with yellow veining. Not growing large, they should be mass planted to have the proper effect.
