Growing Pineapples

Growing a pineapple at home only requires that you have an existing healthy pineapple fruit to start with.

A healthy pineapple has leaves that are green and reasonably strong (they don't just fall out by themselves). The shell of the fruit will be nicely golden (rather than all green), and quite firm. (Also, I like mine to taste great!)

The new pineapple plant will grow from the "crown" of the fruit. That is inside the top part (inch or two) of the fruit with the leaves. Slice this crown off with a sharp knife (slowly and carefully - it's easy to slip).

Any remaining fruit flesh or shell must be removed because it will go off later.

After you've done this trimming preparation (and eaten a couple of slices, Mmmm), it's recommended that you leave the crown upside down in the dark (and dry). This is to let the cuts and holes heal, and to prevent any rotting. You don't have to, but it's a good idea.
