The Seed Guild
This article was provided by Compass Seeds
The Seed Guild was established in 1993 to bring unusual and exotic seeds from Botanic Gardens and seed collecting sources worldwide to the enthusiastic amateur gardener.
It is an opportunity for the gardener to obtain seed from places as diverse as Siberia and South America, encompassing a large variety of seeds. When one Garden can collect seed from 83 different varieties of hawthorn and another 30 different primula, the extent of the variety available becomes apparent.
The seed collected in the Botanic Gardens is normally only available on an exchange basis with other Botanic Gardens and because it cannot be collected from large numbers of plants on a commercial scale it is not readily available from seed merchants. Because we purchase our seed from participating Botanic Gardens and collectors, and not from commercial sources, some species are limited to a few packets. It is therefore impractical to produce a seed catalogue and we distribute the seeds on a membership share system. (see overleaf for details).
Seeds are currently obtained from Australia, Austria, Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, England, Germany, Hungary, Malaysia, Russia, Scotland, South Africa and Ukraine. We continually strive to find new sources of seed supplies for our members.
Planning to plant trees in the millennium? We carry a wide selection of tree seeds and now is the time to sow them for transplanting in the year 2000. Choose a Silver share and write TREES ONLY when indicating your preference. You will then receive 20 packets of tree seeds and be able to leave an impressive legacy for future generations.
